Welcome, folks! This is the 1st Annual Live-Blog coverage of the Academy Awards here at The Porkchop Express. On Friday, we gave you our predictions about what will come away with the big prizes for the 91st Academy Awards. Follow along for our live comments, and let us know what you think! Winners will be marked in bold!
8:01PM: I’m definitely down with a rousing performance by Queen to kick things off. Adam Lambert…not doing as much for me. That classic riff, though! A show without a host should be interesting.
8:03PM: Have these people ever been to a concert before? Jesus, those fist-pumps are awful.
8:05PM: I am a sucker for a good montage. 2018 was a pretty damn good year.
8:07PM: Why not just have these ladies host? Do they ever not crush these things? *Shrug*
8:09PM: I love Amy Adams. That is all.
8:11PM: BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: REGINA KING, IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK
8:12PM: I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing the film yet, but I’m all for more Regina King. THE LEFTOVERS, SEASON 2!
8:15PM: Thanks to my brother, I saw FREE SOLO (’18) and it was WILD. Really, really good. I haven’t seen these others, but WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR (’18) WAS ROBBED!
8:16PM: BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE: FREE SOLO
8:16PM: Well-deserved. Great movie. It made me physically nauseous, but you know, in a fun way.
8:18PM: When they’re making a big thing out of speeches going quick, and you are LITERALLY taking a break mid-speech….c’mon!
8:24PM: Tom Morello introducing Vice is both the most punk-rock the Oscars have ever been and super on brand for both parties. I dig it.
8:25PM: BEST MAKEUP AND HAIR-STYLING: VICE
8:26PM: Yeah, that makes sense.
8:27PM: These speeches are starting to make me cringe.
8:29PM: Brian Tyree Hill is a goddamn national treasure.
8:30PM: BEST COSTUME DESIGN: BLACK PANTHER
8:30PM: Again, didn’t really see that going any other way. Nor should it. A great win.
8:32PM: I gotta be honest, I kinda like this no-host thing. Definitely *feels* like it’s moving at a better clip, anyway.
8:38PM: I’m going Black Panther on this one.
8:39PM: BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN: BLACK PANTHER
8:39PM: Nailed it.
8:43PM: Twitter fact: Only 3 black women have won Oscars for anything other than acting. 2 of them just happened tonight. Pretty incredible!
8:44PM: BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: ROMA
8:45PM: I mean, yeah. Well-deserved. It’s the most gorgeous movie of 2018, no contest.
8:56PM: BEST SOUND EDITING: BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
8:59PM: BEST SOUND MIXING: BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
9:00PM: I was kind of thinking First Man but what the fuck do I know?
9:06PM: BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM: ROMA
9:06PM: There was literally no way on Earth anything else was going to win. Can he take Best Picture, too though, or is this a consolation prize? DUN-DUN-DUN.
09:07: “There are no waves, only an ocean.” Cuarón rules. What a line.
9:17PM: Trevor Noah FTW. Funny as shit, and a thoughtful closer. Maybe I need to watch The Daily Show more.
9:17PM: I will ALWAYS welcome more Michael Keaton. One of my favorites.
9:19PM: BEST FILM EDITING: BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
9:20PM: Um, what? This…makes me kind of concerned for BP. Bohemian Rhapsody is fine, I guess? What a weird win.
9:24PM: BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: MAHERSHALA ALI, GREEN BOOK
9:25PM: Haven’t seen the movie yet, but hard to be mad at a guy like Ali for another win. Side note: hopefully True Detective finale doesn’t suck.
9:31PM: BEST ANIMATED FEATURE: SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDERVERSE
9:35PM: I loved Buster Scruggs but Jesus, that just sucked all of the energy out of the room for me.
9:36PM: UNRELATED, BUT: THE IRISHMAN TEASER!!!!
9:40PM: Wayne’s World clip of the boys singing is better than Bohemian Rhapsody. Just saying.
9:44PM: BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM: BAO
9:47PM: BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT: PERIOD. END OF SENTENCE.
9:57PM: BEST VISUAL EFFECTS: FIRST MAN
9:57PM: First Man really should have been competing in more categories tonight, but I’ll take it!
10:00PM: Kudos again to Bradley Cooper for having the stones to sing live, especially like this. I’M THROWING SHADE AT YOU, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY.
10:02PM: Can I marry Lady Gaga now, please?
10:08PM: BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT: SKIN
10:09PM: Love the energy from the short film winners.
10:10PM: Samuel L. Jackson shouting out the Knicks home win to Spike Lee is the best ad-lib of the night.
10:11PM: BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: GREEN BOOK
10:12PM: MEH. A big fat fucking meh. Sorry not sorry.
10:15PM: BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: BLACK KKKLANSMAN
10:15PM: SPIKE! SPIKE! SPIKE! It’s about GODDAMN time! So happy Samuel L. got to deliver it, too. What a great moment.
10:17PM: “Let’s do the right thing! You know I had to get that in there!”
10:21PM: FIRST MAN was robbed for Best Score!
10:22PM: Tessa Thompson and Michael B. Jordan are great together. Please keep making movies together.
10:23PM: BEST ORIGINAL SCORE: BLACK PANTHER
10:26PM: BEST ORIGINAL SONG: SHALLOW
10:27PM: DUH! But also, I fucking love that song.
10:41PM: SPIKE LEE AND BARBRA STREISAND, EVERYBODY! I love it.
10:43PM: Personally, I like Bale. But it’s probably Malek. Which, okay, I guess?
10:44PM: BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE: RAMI MALEK, BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
10:45PM: I realize I’m in the minority on this one, but I don’t especially get it. I like the dude an awful lot, though, so I’m not mad. But also…meh.
10:47PM: As my main man Fran pointed out, a lot of awards getting handed out tonight for MOST. Rami definitely did the MOST acting.
10:49PM: Nice shout-out to Lucy Boynton, co-star and his leading lady in life (ba-dum-ching!)
10:57PM: I STILL WANT GAGA TO WIN, THOUGH!
10:59PM: BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE: OLIVIA COLMAN
10:59PM: WOW!!! A LEGITIMATE UPSET! I thought for sure Glenn Close was gonna lock it down! Colman was terrific though, so good on her!
11:00PM: Olivia Colman is giving my favorite speech of the night. Glenn Close is a class act.
11:07PM: BEST DIRECTOR: ALFONSO CUARON
11:09PM: Well-deserved, truly. They got this one right.
11:11PM: With one award left to go…this is going to be one of the shorter ceremonies in some time. I think they were onto something with this no host thing!
11:14PM: BEST PICTURE: GREEN BOOK
11:14PM: There’s the Academy I know. A really disappointing, conventional choice. What a bummer of a note to go out on. Though I kinda called it.
11:17PM: Well, that was…something, I guess. Olivia Colman is the MVP. Thanks to any and all who stopped by. Hope you enjoyed the show!
